Aleks Bartosik: Real Human Beings

A series of large-scale figurative paintings, loosely based on the 1870 novel Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Real Human Beings explores the boundaries between the real and the imaginary.  Motivated by the particularities, delicacies, sensitivities, beauties and obsessions held within the relationships between lovers, siblings/twins, friends, strangers, and ourselves, Bartosik observes interactions between people and re-creates them using her own scenarios, environments and narratives. She challenges the viewer to dream through her deliberate narration and obsession with drawing in painting to investigate her/his own ability and willingness to imagine, pretend, dream and suspend disbelief.

The White Water Gallery’s presentation of Aleks Bartosik: “Real Human Beings” is produced in partnership with Line Gallery.

Saturday, March 17th @ 7pm

Artists and Art-lovers are asked to swing by and visit the White Water Gallery for an evening of art and conversation. There will be some minor activities provided as well as an Artist Talk with Performance Artist Jordan Bennett. Jordan Bennett is a multi-disciplinary visual artist of Mi’kmaq decent who calls the west coast of Newfoundland home. His work is derived from a combination of popular and traditional cultural reflections, which he portrays through his passion for and knowledge of pop culture, traditional craft, and his own cultural practices.

This party is a follow-up to Nipissing University’s exciting “Performing Politics: Aboriginal Performance Art in the Canadian Context” events.
