Dana Holst: Sometimes Rainbows are Black

Dana Holst: Sometimes Rainbows are Black
September 16th – October 15th, 2011
Reception: September 16th @ 7pm

Holst’s current body of work titled “Sometimes Rainbows are Black” explores themes of female anxiety and self-loathing in contemporary society through the use of fairytale-based imagery, fashion/able embellishments and kinetic elements. In the past her work flirted with power struggles between the sexes, from paintings of angry little girls in prissy outfits to naked women posing with cleaning equipment, juxtaposed against/ fighting against naked men posing with gardening equipment. “Sometimes Rainbows are Black” is a collection of drawings and sculptural installation looking at media and societal pressure to hate oneself.
